My Interview with GameDevID

July 1st, 2007 by mae-tj

Game Developers Indonesia

I did an interview with GamedevID, unfortunately the interview-Q and A form is in Indonesian language. So, if you are an Indonesian gamedev, click this link : Q and A interview

And you can also fill in the Q and A interview form yourself, considering you are a game developer or an artist or a hobbyist, it doesn’t matter, just fill in the form and let everyone else know what you think about the game development and industry in Indonesia!

Jawaban dari Mae
yang lalu.

J : Nama lengkap kamu siapa ?
T : Mae

J : Universitas / Kampus/ Sekolah / Organisasi / Company / Team kamu namanya apa ?
T : Jiao Tong University in 3D animation,  Spicy Horse Games American Mcgee

J : jabatannya apa ?
T : 3D artist, Game Tester (Quality Assurance)

J : ymid dan msnidnya apa ?
T : YM : Ladywolf

T : Modeling, Texturing, Character design, Game review, QA
testing, Maya, 3D max, Photoshop, Flash, Painter, After effects

T : Bikin simple gaming object for Grimm Project-American Mcgee

kamu ?
T : Kalo menurut gue, I love the
job, so…can\’t live without it, jadi untung atau tidak untung, i

yaitu kecenderungan negara2 industri maju melempar proses pembuatan

mengerjakan project outsourcing ? arts 2D/3D, Programming, Sound

dunia industri games nasional ?
T : Sangat diperlukan.
berkembang seperti China, Thailand, Vietnam, jadi menurut gue Indonesia

sekarang ? apakah berdasarkan minat/bakat kamu ataukah kebetulan ? bila
I have great passion in the game
industry, game , and cannot live without it.
kembali menarik minat masyarakat.

games lokal (programmer/developer/artis/composer/businessmen) ? apakah
masalah fund ? equipment/peralatan ? infrastruktur ? kreativitas ?
skills/knowledge terbatas ? inovasi ? talent/bakat ? ceritakan dong ,
menurut pandangan kamu

FULLDLS

Are you stuck in cities that only have pirated games
like me~~ (in China) ? So the games that is on the market are old old games,
never be able to get the newest ones? (Even if it is pirated?)

Poor Poor us! I envy those people that can buy original versions with nice casing or display box, with manual book inside, and technical fault services! And can get the newest released game in the world!

Then are you looking for a site that offers downloading games for free? Newly released games that is not sold on small piracy store?

*I see nods and desperate screams*

Then download it!

Have to pay      have to register      virus included

NO!

IT IS FREE, BABY!

Just go to
FULLDLS

There have ALL kinds of games, including Playstation games, including musics and movies, and even books, anime (including hentai), pictures, softwares, tv shows, and others.

But you need to download BitComet to be able to download the files you want.

There is a new version of BitComet. It is BitComet 0.85
Here is the link to download it :

Get it from CNET Download.com!

more info on BitComet :click here

TIPS (READ IT ! IT’S IMPORTANT):

When you pick a file you want to download, some sick
people will add SeXX Torrent link in the compressed folder ( .Rar or
.Zip) But with BitComet, you can choose not to include those files in
your download. Because BitComet will show you what are the files that is
inside the compressed folder. So you can just simply uncheck the files
that says Sexx-o-Torrent or whatever with sexx. Unless you want it to
be in the list though, then don’t uncheck it. But i suggest you uncheck it, do not download those files, because i suspect there might be virus in it.

Also, everytime after you finish downloading the files, scan it with Antivirus just to make sure  your computer doesn’t end up being ’sick’. I love my computer so much, I bet you do too, so treasure it and take a good care of it.

If you say you don’t love your computer, answer this question : "Can you live without computer?"

My answer surely is : I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT COMPUTER!

LOL

WHO’s WHO SERIES : American McGee

March 9th, 2007 by mae-tj

III.                      AMERICAN MCGEE

Currently, I am doing my internship with Spicy Horse, American McGee’s Shanghai based game development studio.

And i believe you all recognize the name American McGee, It might sound familiar. Well, he is just as popular as the game he created with his EA team some time ago : Alice McGee. However if you never heard of the name American McGee, you can read through this post and click on the link : American McGee’s Profile below.

As you all know, I desperately want to be in this industry. How do i ever get this internship, is because American is so kind to take me in. And let me be there as long as i want– as long i still want to learn something and keep on learning from day to day.

Mcgee_1American McGee

And, I do want to learn! I went in as a 3D artist, transforming myself into a sponge and keep on absorbing all the information i can get. Even though my main goal is to be a game designer, with all this idea of a game hopping up in my brain and my imagination everyday.

I just cannot stop making a whole scene of a game in my imagination world. I will imagine the storyline, even the characters, and how the game will be played, I even imagine the environment, and the players reaction, The cinematics, The audio sound, I also sing some of the tunes.
I can see them in my head, in my world of imagination. But sadly enough, i never be able to show it to somebody since it is all in my head.

Yeah, maybe i should write my ideas here in my blog someday.

Mcgee_photo1_3 I will not stop learning. I just do not know how to make a game yet. But i will keep on going, taking those steps one by one until i can make a game of my own.

American is a really down to earth type of guy. He is not bossy at all. He is nice and like to give me encouragements. He will come to my table once in a while and ask how you are doing ?

and stuff like that.

Also, when i do research about American in the internet, some girls will say he is a handsome lot. But i haven’t been able to see it just yet. LOL. I am sorry American..if you ever read this..

So i would look at him with my head tilted and wonder…Maybe white girl’s taste of being handsome is American as an example. But i am not saying he is bad looking or whatsoever, he is okay,  cool, tall, with those blue eyes.

Me_and_american_4
me and american

Whenever i am in the office, i just hardly hear American laughed his head off. To me, he seems like the ‘programmer’ type of guy. Quiet, cool, down to earth, not being too emotional, doesn’t talk a lot here and there.

I dunno, maybe it is just because i do not know him well enough..hahaha..maybe i should update this post one day..if i ever still be able to stay in Spicy Horse and get to work with American.

However, i will not throw away the opportunity he gave me. I will always remember the kindness and if i ever become real good in whatever field i am doing, i will back him up and I also hope someday i might be able to be of use instead of just an ordinary employee.

28 March 2007

I want to update this blog. Now i really can see that American is a really nice guy. He even let me return to my internship after being off for quite some time since i was sick and was hospitalized.

He also send me sms to show that he care for his employee.

I have a great, good looking, kind, down to earth boss! What more can i get?! See how lucky i am!

BEST GAME EVER : CSI–The Game

February 7th, 2007 by mae-tj

Best serial detective game ever :

CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION - THE GAME

Don’t call yourself a detective-game lover if you never played the C.S.I game.

Screen22

Crime scene investigation screenshot

The game has been released into four serials :

  • CSI one : Crime scene investigation
  • CSI two : CSI Dark Motives
  • CSI three : CSI Miami
  • CSI four : Three dimensions of murder

The CSI game is really great to play even from CSI one until the latest. Interesting storyline, great graphics, with trademark voices from the original TV series CSI.

The detective tools in the game is what making this game interesting. I got to be like a real detective, taking finger prints, detecting blood, taking samples of smears, taking footprints, collecting evidences, interrogating suspects, go to places and search through everything.

2lgCSI Dark Motive screenshot

Not to mention the lab, where i can examine further the evidence i collected from the crime scene. And the guy in the lab also give cool information about each items scientifically.

Also the mini puzzles are fun, putting together torn letters, cracking sentences, and they even have a DNA analysis and microscope in the lab!

The morgue and the coroner, Dr Al Robbins in the morgue is also cool, where the dead victim will be analyzed from the medical point of view.

I love the scientific cinematics the most. It just continues to amaze me looking at the microscopic inside view of our body. I even replayed the cinematics twice everytime.

Man, i am a great fan of CSI. And i will buy the game no matter what if they ever release a new series!

TIPS : WHere to buy English Version Games in Germany ?

February 7th, 2007 by mae-tj

TIPS FOR GAMER :

WHERE TO BUY AN ENGLISH VERSION GAME IN GERMANY ?

Ahh…so you are a gamer ? Just came to Germany ?  Desperately looking for an english version game ?

Well, you can hardly find any on the stores. But you can order it online from Okaysoft . And they even send it right to your front door!

Q and A

Is it safe to order online ?
Its totally safe. I ordered it all the time when i was in Berlin.

How do you pay ?
The easiest way is to pay it in the post office. So you only pay once the game has arrived in a post office nearest to your home. The post courier will send it to your home, but when you are not around, they will leave a paper, telling you in which post office you can pick up your game

Or deduct it automatically from your bank.
(I did try both payments methods)

What versions do they have ?
Okaysoft offers English version (from UK), US version (From USA) and German version. The price however, is differ from the version you order. Since US version is imported from the US, it has the highest price. So i suggest ordering the English version from UK.

Note :
The website is in Deutsch, but you can always see the game title, which is in English, and furthermore, Okaysoft have almost ALL the games in the market.
You can even order from them if it is not on the list.

HAPPY GAMING!

WHO’s WHO SERIES : Jenova Chen

February 6th, 2007 by mae-tj

WHO’S WHO SERIES

II.  JENOVA CHEN

Who is this Jenova Chen ? In case you are wondering, I will divide the subject into two parts. That is the best thing i can do to describe Jenova.

378075118_7670f880a4

Jenova(middle) with Spore team(Maxis)

Professionally, he is a game designer, founder of That Game Company, a successful man in the field. If you go through his resume : Jenova’s Resume , you will know what i mean by being so successful and young.

And the scary thing is, yes, he got scholarships almost all the time in his life on earth! (Man, i would consider myself amazingly lucky if i ever… and i mean.. ever.. get a scholarship. Even if it is just once in my life. (Or maybe more than lucky, but ti ‘ is a miracle~~~!)

Anyway, Jenova also is the one who created the game Flow, which is going to be produced in PS3 platform. You can find more information about the game in Jenova’s personal website.

Furthermore, his blog is really inspiring for me, through his deep insight and research about game design, i can always learn something from reading his blog. Which i suggest all of you to read too.
Especially the Flow theory.

Have you ever stop and think for awhile , what makes a game is good to play for one people but not good for the other ? Why somebody will spend hours playing and not even realizing he/she has missed her lunch ? What makes you keep on going for hours and hours ? Why the excitement ? Where is it from ?

Read his thesis about the Flow theory. You will get your answers there.

237474666_a8406942ca_1

When i was reading his Thesis, I was like : "Man! Wherever he got that thoughts from ??! I never know somebody will ever thought about something like this."

Jenova Chen

And when i go through his resume i was like : " Wow..look at those achievements that this guy got! He must be 40 years

old or something." –lol

So now comes to personally, I got his MSN from ’somewhere’, cannot expose openly here. I got to ask his permission first. So for the mean time i’ll just say : ’somewhere’.

Then at first (since i thought he is an old– 40 years old guy) i called him Mr Chen. Until he told me when i asked him how old is he, then he answered : 24…I was like… totally…..unable to accept..ahahahah : WHAT!!!!??? DAMN!!!

That was in June/July 2006. When I just started my animation course. And until now, he is very humble and kind to talk to me and give me tips here and there. I really look up to him and take him as my role model. And I wanted to meet him someday.

145425199_64e6ab1c55

Jenova’s Dad (More handsome than Jenova)

Even when his moody feelings comes and take over, hardly saying anything on chat, i still respect him being tired from the job (sometimes he just forgot to rest and work ’till 2 am) or busy doing something (workaholic) or playing world of warcraft (all men plays wow and addicted to it rather than to his own girlfriend).

The cool thing is, i can even relate to Jenova about my problems and he is a very positive person. I also get constantly moral support from him. Whenever i want to jump off the building from trying so hard to be in the industry, whenever i feel like giving up and cry, he will tell me never to give up.

Yes, thank you so much Jenova-sama, i will never forget the kindness, and hope that i can return it to you someday.

Well…even two full pages will never get me satisfied from writing about Jenova.

So i guess i’ll just end it here and not bore you with all the details.

Currently Playing : Secret Files : Tunguska

February 4th, 2007 by mae-tj

SECRET FILES : TUNGUSKA

This game is exactly what i have been talking about all this time! Logical problem solving, no annoying-unclear-no hint riddles, fully enjoyable to play, great graphics, nice story.

This game is also easy to play even for beginners in adventure game. It has the search screen option on the bottom right corner as you can see in the screenshot below.

This is the feature that i like the most from this game. So if they got to put small tiny items on the floor, i don’t have to be crazy and wasting my time searching the whole scene for 30 minutes! So when i get a little stuck, instead of looking for some walkthrough, i can just click the search screen button on the bottom right of the screen.

Clipboard02

Screen search option from Secret Files : Tunguska

Then voila! It shows all the items that are able to be examined or interact with.

This option also has advantages to both sides, from the developer’s side, they got to make sure their hardwork of all the items that is made in the game not wasted or passed by, and from the gamer’s side, yes, we don’t want to miss any of the items either!

And the cursor is representing a mouse with left and right click on it. It will be highlighted in green on the left click side if some items can be activated, or if i take out an item from the inventory and place the cursor on an item in the scene, it will also be highlighted in green on the left click side if this item can be interacted together. And right clicking if the highlighted is on the right side will make the character to examine the object.

However if the item cannot be interacted or activated somehow, there wont be any green highlight on the cursor.

So it is really pretty easy, thus making you not needing any ‘peek’ on hints in the internet.

Also, they got a neat looking journal option on the bottom right corner of the screen, where i can read back what i have gone through and the storyline so far.

Clipboard01

The Journal from Secret Files : Tunguska

Even more helping, they give clues to some riddles or password-cracking in the game. If the question mark sign appear on left top on the screen whenever i am facing a riddle, i can open my journal and they will give me clues on how i can solve this problem.

IT IS TOTALLY COOL!

What this game missed out is, the sound of the footsteps. I can hear like… : nothing.

And the people that is filling the voice is somewhat amateurs. Also the sentences are not  correctly used to express certain situations.

But the graphics are great, and at least the character moves a bit when they are talking, not being a stone statue.

But i say the main character, Nina, is not expressive enough. She got like a dead gorgeous but ‘dead’ eyes.

Clipboard06

Secret files : Tunguska screenshot

Even when she is on cinematics. Those beautiful eyes are dead.

And also, I get to switch character between Nina and Max later on in the game. This is some feature that i liked from new styled adventure game in the past years. (For more example you can found this feature also in Broken sword III and IV, The Ankh.)

Clipboard04

Currently as Max, to activate Nina, i have to click on Nina picture on the bottom right corner of the screen. Secret files : Tunguska screenshot

This post will be updated when i finished the game.

Updated : 8 March 2007

Actually i managed to finished this game some time ago but only now i have the time to update this post.

The ending is disappointing. It has no cinematics at all. And no clear explanation of the whole adventure. It also seems like near the end of the game, the story is shortened a lot to make up to the finishing line.

However at ending, they promised of a new adventure of Nina and Max coming up soon.

BENOIT SOKAL’s : PARADISE

January 30th, 2007 by mae-tj

BENOIT SOKAL’s PARADISE

Never heard of the name Benoit Sokal ? Aww…….come on…don’t tell me you haven’t played Syberia I and Syberia II. No?? Haven’t ?!

Awww….give me a break! What a pity. You should not missed those two! It is categorized as best adventure games together with all other -good to play and to enjoy- adventure games.

41802_1

Paradise concept art

And Benoit Sokal, is the Belgian guy that is behind this two titles. After joining Microids and created Syberia I and II, he opens up his own company called White Birds Production and made the game Paradise with Ubisoft as its publisher.

The graphic of Paradise is breathtaking! They give ‘bonus for the eyes’ which is a totally beautiful animation clips that i can watch over and over again once i have passed that part.

41702_2

Paradise screenshot

I really love it when i play an adventure game, and they give me rewards for my eyes to take pleasure in.

I feel like : *with 5 years old voice* after the ‘hard work’ on finishing that part, i get to see an animation clip that looks gooooooood! Yey! My eyes and me feels good too!We are happy!

ahahahahaahahhahah…lol

So that also makes me, really annoyed when i finished a game, and the ending is : nothing special, no cool animation, nothing!

making me curse the production company automatically :  What a CHEAP SXXT! DAMN! STINGY ASS! (What a bad attitude~~! yeah i know…i am sorry… but i really cannot help it)

41707_1

Paradise screenshot

This Paradise game has a little happening that irritates me. That is …when i got to be the Leopard at night. The movement is not good to control and is uncomfortable. The mission is unclear. But luckily they give us ‘press the escape key to skip’ feature.

And what i also found out in this game, is that they like to put things on areas where is a little hidden or small in the corner or up in the tree…well…it is not funny you know…making people go round and around looking for it!

But overall, this game is worth to buy. If you love good graphics, don’t miss this one.
